Weekly Wrap Up 11

This week was quite simple. For the fact that our school week consisted of only Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. Daddy left to go back to work on Tuesday and the rest of the week I’ve been feeling under the weather with a cold.
...booo

No crafts, projects or even much reading aloud.
Just a bit of math, copy work, bible study, latin, scripture memory  and history this week.

And Mommy napping on the sofa.

  1. Mommy getting creative with Alba''''s hair
  2. Starfall

Eagle shot an arrow into the trees and is trying to throw a long piece of wood to retrieve it. He says he's waiting for a really windy day to get the arrow and the long piece of wood down from the tree. haha -boys!

 Alba writing up a storm.

  1. New books came in the mail. Yay!
  2. Colouring page from history

  1. Cheesy spinach goodness
  2. Home-made tomato soup

Here's hoping that next week is full of healthy bodies in this house.

Have a relaxing weekend friends,
Mo

Weekly Wrap Up 10

some photos from last week...

I mentioned in last weeks wrap-up that we did school on Saturday. I had photos and totally forgot to add them, so here they are.

Alba on Starfall.

Love, love that site. Fell in love when Zazu was a toddler. It's really a treat for any of my kids to go on a device (computer & iPad). I usually make it "Educational". Eagle gets annoyed when I pull the educational card, but, oh well. I'm the Mom(hee hee).

Our progress in Song School Latin.

And also on each of the boy's cork board they have their phonegram charts up from All About Spelling. I hope to be on our way into the next section next week. We're right at the beginning of Level One but so far, the program is living up to the reviews and hype I've read over the last few years.

On to This Week...

Monday
Sniffles, Cleaning & Lego

Even though the sniffles have struck two of my kids (Alba&Eagle), Alba and Zazu wanted to help wash puppy drool windows. I caught Alba working hard to get the goobers off.
My little helper!

Currclick Lego Club (Knights & Castles)

Perfect go along with our history study.

Tuesday
I walked into the school room to find Alba and Zazu had already started on the things I set out the night before for school in their pj's. Alba said with a huge smile, "Thank you Mom for making all this for me!" I felt so special when she said that, it made my morning.

Cowboy Zazu

Another perk to homeschooling!
Unfortunately the toy gun became a distraction.

Eagle completed the final bridge in his Life of Fred Pre-Algebra with Biology  today! yay!
credit
If anyone wonders, Zazu is on Chapter 11 in Life of Fred Cats
The boys REALLY enjoy Life of Fred! Math has never been the same since we brought that little 5 year old genius into our home!

Wednesday
Some items on our agenda which were completed.

  • Baked Viking Bread for History (family work)

  • Botany (family work)

  • Reading

  • Read Ch.2 All-of-a-Kind Family (family read aloud)
  • Math
  •

Thursday
Considering Daddy came home Thursday, it was a little more relaxed around here. Daddy gathered everyone to pray before school (love when he initiates prayer with the family). Chores and a bit of school work were on the agenda. The boys worked on little chunks of things, like spelling, history and botany. Besides their independent work of math and copywork for the day.

Friday
The kids and Daddy hopped in the vehicle this morning to drive to Edmonton to take in a Star Wars exhibit. It's a 3 hour drive, but for Daddy and the boys it's well worth it. Only 2 cities in Canada are getting this exhibition apparently. I would have liked to tag-along, but Daddy insisted I stay home and have some quality Mommy time. So here I am with you, and the dogs. I hope they bring back a few photos I can share with you.
I did pack a workbook and reading material for  each of the kids for the drive.

E Week &
Wrap up to The Snowy Day

We've had fun reading The Snowy Day many, many times. Alba has worked on most of the activities, and some, well just not yet. The lapbook we made will surely entertain her in the future. I plan to keep it in our cloth storage bin filled with all the other age appropriate activity books, lapbooks, and other fun things for Alba.

Melissa & Doug Cube Pets Puzzle.
She almost had it, except for two middle pieces.

I'm noticing that she seems to have more fun with the rice in the Letter sensory bin than anything else I put in. This week I've taken away the rice and the bin, to see if she'd be more inclined to explore the themed items on their own. It seems she's stuck between big girl preschooler and toddler sometimes. So, I'm at a loss when she proclaims she's bored.

One of her favourite tot activity, is sticking tooth picks in a spice container. I set it out for her, but she wasn't interested.

If you read previously, Alba and I planted Touch plant seeds on Valentines. Things weren't looking great in the germination department, so I covered the dirt with plastic wrap last week to help keep the top moist. I think it may have helped. We checked on the Touch Plant seeds today and there's GREEN, wonderful living green! I think I may need to do a little research on our new plant, to insure it's continual growth.

We had a GREAT time painting together!

And food...
Quiche (spinach, shredded potato, cauliflower)

Printables used in this post

Preschool Corner-2 weeks - time with Mommy

I don't spend time playing (school time) with Zazu everyday, but then we don't consistently do school everyday either. I tend to do activities with Zazu at the beginning of our day when Eagle is working on his own or during Alba's nap time. When we do sit down together I feel so blessed. I find that he respects and obeys me more when we spend this time together compared to the days when we don't do school as a family or I don't spend special time with him.
Funny how that is.

This was a simple find the hidden pictures.
Look at that dog, isn't he so thoughtfully coloured.

This puzzle I received from a friend and I don't know where she got it from. I'll have to look around online maybe. It's neat, having 3 puzzles in a bag. A giraffe, which has a capital letter on each piece. A frog, which has the lower case and ... ? another animal with numbers. Sorry, my memory isn't working at the moment and I'm not about to go digging for the puzzle. We had fun building the puzzle together.

The following are pictures of a fireman lapbook we worked on from Homeschool Creations.

Zazu did very well with patterns. He caught on right away and built 2 on his own that were correct. It was enjoyable.

This puzzle was challenging for Zazu but he loved it.
This was his reaction when it was finished.

Matching the spots to the correct number.

Counting the spots.
Favorite activity (so far) in the lapbook. While working on it he told me that he really liked it.

10!
He's sounding out "T...E...N".

We also played shadow matching like memory match.
Kids at this age seem so easy to please. Play a little memory match and smiles appear.

Front cover of the lapbook.

Inside the lapbook.
If you noticed, I printed everything on regular paper and glued card stock, card board (cereal box) or coloured construction paper to the backs of pockets and game pieces. I also made a pocket for the puzzle pieces.

The back.
I guess he wanted the back to look good too.

Thanks to Jolanthe for the Fireman lapbook.
It's great!

Preschool Corner

Sometimes I get discouraged about the lack of living space in our home, but that's another post.
I roughly use the workbox system for our learning time. Eagle uses a simple file box to hold his daily schooling items. I use time, work with mom cards, etc. that are attached to each hanging folder. It takes up very little space, I'm able to keep it on the school shelf beside the kitchen table where we do most of our sit down learning. It works really well for us. Now that we are doing more pre k type activities with Zazu and with k-1 coming up, I found it important to schedule him in. The whole schedule/planner thing hasn't really been working for me. So I like being able to throw stuff into the box the night before. Time with mom is so important. Previous to this, I was haphazardly spending time with Zazu. Now that I'm using a really basic approach to the system with Zazu, our time together is deliberate and not rushed, which makes our home lighter and time together much more enjoyable. There's even been less misbehaving, I assume it's because of the one on one time with Mommy. I wish to incorporate this method with Zazu but on a larger scale more similar to the actual workbox style next year. I introduced Zazu to the storage tower last week and he immediately caught on to the concept. He knows that the top box must be completed before the one under it, and so on. The tower is 5 tiers, so it's not intimidating at all (for me).

Puppet making.

Picture find within a picture.

We love this book.

Love it!

We are slowly getting into the seasons, months and days of the year. We sang the months of the year song and put our calendar cards on our magnetic white board. Our large classroom calendar is just too big for our home.

Speaking of magnets.
I hid some paper clips and magnets in the rice bin and gave Zazu the U-shaped magnet from our set to search with.

He had a blast!

I picked this book up from the dollar store last year, I wish I would have bought another.
Slim Series
(this is not what we have, we have the Addition one)

They are great. After every page there is a spot to put a gold star.

Zazu was really eager to put his star on. I was able to use the GOLD STICKER to my advantage, saying that if he re-wrote a sad looking number then that would help him get his star.
It worked!

Good Book coming up.

I picked it up from our library. I would like to buy it because we really enjoyed it. The book is broken down into 5 units: flowers, fruit, gardens, nuts and seeds, and trees. Each unit has 4 pages for nursery rhymes, discussion questions and activities related to the unit.

We played a little memory. (the original)
Good fun.

AND
after we finished playing Zazu counted the pairs all by himself.

AND
got the right number.

15! pairs

We read this The Little Island and I printed off a free lapbook from Homeschool Share. We have only reviewed the animal cards and searched for the critters in the pages of the book. I really don't know how far we'll get with the lapbook, because it seems a tad advanced for him.
Oh well, reading it is great still even without the lapbook.

Phonics Fun!
Zazu played the letter sound matching game again this week.

AND of course.
There's always lots of:
  • hugs & kisses
  • LEGO
  • playing outside
  • helping Mommy
  • looking at books alone
  • making up silly songs
all through out the week.
